Nokia booms in China

Although the growth is primarily attributable to Nokia's strategy to sell low-cost handsets outside of the main cities, multimedia services and mobile internet access are a high priority.
David Tang, Nokia's VP for China sales, said upgrades for higher-end models was good, with revenues 'quite balanced' between the high, mid and budget markets.

The Nokia Phone Guide quotes employees of China Mobile saying that supplies of the Nokia N95 have been outstripped by demand. Nokia claims 15 per cent of mobile users in CHina access the internet through their handsets each day.

Tang said: "Millions and millions of mobile users are having their first web experience through mobile phones and we believe we are in a very, very unique position to take advantage... and really help them experience the world of the internet."

The FT cites research from Analysys International that shows Nokia taking 35 per cent of the Chinese handset market by units in the third quarter, compared to 14 per cent for Motorola.

Motorola, however, has already experienced notable mobile multimedia success in China with its full-track music store.

London Fashion Week designer uses mobile NFC system to boost sales

This year's London Fashion Week has seen the first use of mobile near field communications (NFC) to help sell a fashion range.
An NFC system from operator O2 is allowing fashion buyers give instant feedback on the latest Emilio de la Morena collection this week.
The system, at Emilio de la Morena's catwalk show at the London Science Museum, will enable the label to instantly know which designs are likely to be the hottest by getting immediate feedback from fashion buyers attending the show.
As they leave the show, fashion buyers equipped with a Nokia 6131 NFC handset will be able to register interest in specific designs in the range's Autumn-Winter 2008/9 collection.
They will be able to use the contactless device to "touch" specially designed smart posters featuring the different designs.
Embedded tags within the smart posters automatically send a text message back to the brand indicating which designs they are interested in.
With the main selling event in Paris only two weeks away, the feedback can help a designer tailor specific products to maximise sales.
Emilio de la Morena said, "Traditionally, we are very much in the dark with regards to what buyers think of the collection presented in London before we present the complete collection to buyers in Paris.
"Our partnership with O2 means that for the first time we have a way of immediately capturing essential feedback, providing us with the time to understand what the buyers are thinking and make any changes straight away."

The Mobile Journalism Toolkit contents

So what is in the Mobile Journalism Toolkit? First of all the phone. This is a Nokia N95 which now comes in three different versions. The original European version that we used for most of the trial (image on left). Then there is a the US edition which adds more memory and support for US carrier frequencies. Finally there is the news 8GB version which can store much more music and videos, and for our journalists more raw materials.

The next part of the toolkit are the peripherals. A key component was the bluetooth keyboard that we used. This made it much easier to enter text-based stories in the field. For this we used the Nokia SU-8W (see image on left). This folds up and has a bracket to hold the phone.

We also supplied a basic tripod to help in video interviews and a Sony microphone for directional audio recording and reducing background noise in interviews - this required a special adaptor plug that was made by Nokia for the project. Finally to deal with power issues we also used Power Monkeys, both basic and Explorer versions (see photo). After several models and series like Distinctly Bold is the L'Amour series the ultimate prove for Nokia that fashion, style, the possibility to use creative materials and the attention for details can be combined into a successfull product range.

The three models within the mentioned range show style and fashion in a way Nokia wants to address it and prove that one model cannot carry the load of Nokia fashion statement. Each model has its one way of showing the L'Amour feeling. A feeling that served as a foundation for three talented young Dutch designers and the opportunity they got to create several special and unique fashion designs for the Amsterdam International Fashion Week.

The models used during this unique chance were the Nokia 8800 and the models within the L'Amour series (7360, 7370 and 7380). The final designs can be found below next to a complete new model that Nokia Benelux showed to NewMobile. Read more below!

Nokia showed us the new Nokia 7360 Pink, a special version of the standard 7360. The device has the same specifications as the standard model and is equipped with some special pink design changes. The front of the device is changed and the back got a special pink surface. The Nokia 7360 Pink shall hit the market around October next to the normal version.

Next to the new device Nokia Mobile Phones gave us some inside into the current status of fashion within the company. A successor to the L'Amour series is a normal step, because fashion is hot and Nokia will not push that away. However, there will not be a successor for the Nokia 7380 lipstick phone in the new fashion line, which will be introduced in the upcoming months.
